Kagoshima Excursion — Volcanoes, Gardens & Shrine Wonder
Kagoshima is often called the “Naples of the East,” a coastal city defined by its warm climate, scenic bay, and the towering presence of Sakurajima, one of Japan’s most active volcanoes. Few destinations in Japan combine such a dramatic natural setting with elegant gardens, historic shrines, and laid-back southern charm.
This shore excursion gives you the chance to experience the best of Kagoshima in one day:

9:00 AM – Pickup at Kagoshima Cruise Terminal
Meet your private driver and English-speaking guide at the port. Enjoy a brief introduction to Kagoshima—nicknamed the “Naples of the East” for its dramatic bay setting and volcanic skyline.
9:15 – 11:30 AM – Sakurajima Volcano Excursion
Begin the day with a scenic drive or optional ferry ride across Kinko Bay to Sakurajima, Kagoshima’s most iconic active volcano.
Visit Yunohira Observatory, the highest accessible point on the volcano.
Admire panoramic views of steaming vents, rugged lava fields, and the bay below.
Learn about Sakurajima’s eruptions, geology, and how locals live safely with an active volcano.
11:45 AM – 12:45 PM – Lunch Break
Return toward the city area for a relaxing lunch. Your guide will recommend excellent local restaurants featuring Kagoshima specialties such as:
Kurobuta (black pork) tonkatsu
Fresh local fish and sashimi
Handmade Kagoshima-style noodles Lunch at your own cost.
1:00 – 2:45 PM – Sengan-en Garden & Shimazu Residence
Explore the historic Sengan-en Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site created by the influential Shimazu clan.

Practical planning
Comfort and timing come first.
Timing & routing
Ferry and volcanic-island touring require careful timing; city-side routes offer more flexibility.
Walking & mobility
Sengan-en includes gravel and slopes. Viewpoints and vehicle-based sightseeing can reduce walking.
Before we confirm
We need the cruise line, ship, port date, scheduled arrival and departure, number of guests, and any mobility considerations.
